A Ration Book Christmas by Jean Fullerton

I’m so pleased to be part of the blog tour for this wonderful book today. Thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources for the copy of the book and invitation to be part of the blog tour.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

With Christmas approaching, the Brogan family of London’s East End are braving the horrors of the Blitz. With the men away fighting for King and Country and the ever-present dangers of the German Luftwaffe’s nightly reign of death and destruction, the family must do all they can to keep a stiff upper lip.
For Jo, the youngest of the Brogan sisters, the perils of war also offer a new-found freedom. Jo falls in love with Tommy, a man known for his dangerous reputation as much as his charm. But as the falling bombs devastate their neighbourhood and rationing begins to bite, will the Brogans manage to pull together a traditional family Christmas? And will Jo find the love and security she seeks in a time of such grave peril?

MY REVIEW:

I love a good book set in the time of World War II, so I was really looking forward to reading this one. I’d never read any of Jean Fullerton’s books before, but I’m now a huge fan!

This book really shows how people pulled together in hard times. London is suffering badly during the blitz, but everyone does their best to help each other and to keep their spirits up. Of course, there are the usual unsavoury characters, such as Reggie, who will try to profit from other’s misfortunes, but the best characters in the book are those like Jo and Tommy, who try to help the war effort.

I really liked Jo as a character, she’s kind and caring, but strong too. Tommy comes from a bad place, and has had to fight hard to rise above the easier option of slipping into crime. He has a good heart and moral compass.

I loved the funny, quirky characters such as Queenie, and Eddie. These are hard times, but there are so many funny moments in the book.

This is an all-consuming read, with fabulous characters, humour and love. It really shows the importance of love and family, and how Christmas is about so much more than material things. Very enjoyable and readable.

MY RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
